TBS Crossfire
When it comes a to reliable long range radio link, Crossfire is no doubt the best link money can buy. The TBS Crossfire is a popular radio control system for long range FPV drones. It’s an external RF module that can be installed directly on the back of a radio transmitter (e.g. JR module bay).
Rather than the standard 2.4GHz that is used in most RC systems, the Crossfire operates within the 900MHz band. The low frequency means better signal penetration ability through obstacles and more reliable signal. Therefore many pilots prefer Crossfire even though they don’t intend to fly long range.
It’s hard to tell precisely what the maximum range of Crossfire is as it depends largely on the conditions of where you are flying. Based on personal experience, you could go 20km easily with 250mW (antennas in line of sight).
What you need to get started!
To get started with crossfire you will need to purchase a few things. The first thing you should buy is the TX, more commonly know as the Transmitting component. Most of the TX modules we have on our site are compatible with any radio with a JR bay at the rear end of the radio (excluding the Nano TX). If you are looking for a new radio that requires no external TX module then we would recommend you go for the TBS Tango 2.
The other crucial part of crossfire is the RX or the receiving component. The RX is what you will be attaching to your drone/wing. It can come in a couple of different forms like the Crossfire Nano RX, Crossfire diversity and the PWM receivers. For more Info have a look below
The Crossfire Nano RX is the standard RX receiver for crossfire, if you’re are after a receiver that will get your drone or wing up in the air, this is what we would be recommending to our customers. The Diversity Nano RX operates under the same principle as the Nano RX. The main difference is you have the ability to have two antennas on the receiver for better coverage.
Crossfire TX
Crossfire Micro TX V2
The Crossfire Micro TX V2 is by far the best affordable TX module at this current time. Some good things about the TX module include how practical and simplistic it is, unlike the TX Lite or the long range TX, the Mirco TX doesn’t come with a screen to display location and link quality, all that the Micro TX come with is a led that changes colour depending on Link health. With the ability for it to get 1W (1000mW) just via the connection to the JR bay in the back of most radios and the easy binding makes this the best crossfire TX module for its price.
TBS Crossfire TX lite
The TBS Crossfire long range TX is the best TX module you can buy for crossfire. When looking into a long range TX module The TX lite is what I would be recommend buying the TX lite, with the ability to get up to 2W with an external power source, you can really push your long range capability. The difference between this module and the Long Range TX is this module doesn’t have Bluetooth capabilities.
TBS Tango II
When looking to buy a new radio, the TBS Tango II is what we recommend period. The radio comes with features like low profile switches, a game pad design and built in crossfire capable of 1W of power. The tango 2 Pro comes with the edition of folding gimbles which can make it both easier and safer for transportations.
TBS Crossfire Long Range TX
This TX module is mainly designed for the pilots who like flying long distances. With the ability to push the power to 2W with an external battery source, you will be able to fly 20km+ provided you have good flying conditions. If you are starting out FPV then we do NOT recommend this TX module.
Crossfire RX
TBS Crossfire Nano RX
The Crossfire Nano RX is the standard receiver for Crossfire. There are two variants to the nano RX, they are the same receiver however the come with different antennas. The standard RX comes with an immortal L which can be ideal for wings, whereas the SE comes with the Immortal T which is designed for better coverage on long range flights. Either way, There are very little downsides to both of these variants and we highly recommend them for anyone looking into crossfire.
TBS Crossfire Diversity Nano RX
The TBS Crossfire Diversity Nano Receiver is a compact R/C receiver with 8ch outputs, with record-breaking range capability. The Diversity receiver runs two Immortal L antennas switching between the two antennas depending on which one has a stronger signal. We recommend this receiver to anyone who wants to fly long range.
TBS Crossfire PWM Nano Rx
The Crossfire PWM Nano RX is a receiver that is designed for wings. It has 6 channels on it witch can be great if you are needing to run multiple different servos or ESC’s. Same binding process as a standard Nano RX, the PWM receiver will be a great choice for your wing.
